Study finds new player in insulin regulation

Research led by Monash BDI’s Professor Ian Smyth into a severe skin disease has shifted sideways to reveal a new role for the gene responsible for it in regulating pancreatic lipid homeostasis and insulin secretion. Professor Smyth’s team became interested in the idea that it might also have a role in the pancreas, where related proteins are known to control insulin regulation in beta cells. Their study was published in EMBO Reports and adds an important piece to the puzzle of how insulin is secreted from beta cells within the pancreas. Read more.
